From what I understand, the Luftwaffendrilling carried by the ait crews was issued in a sturdy aluminum case. All were 12x65/12x65/9,3x74R arrangement.
The picture is self-explanitory on why weight becomes as issue with these guns, a lot of it is tied-up in the ribs. Interesting you said about the barrel length because most of them have 26-28" and I saw one many years ago with 30" bbls.
The Savage I had was ecessively clumbsy and even the other models like the .22LR/.410 are not balanced and still excessively bulky despite the smaller bores. Without giving away my secrets, what I can say is that the obvious has been overlooked in making a much slimmer and better balanced gun. I'm really siding towards the 28/28/6,5x52R. Reason being is that for hog/deer hunting, it's no big deal to run 0.535" round balls through the 0.550" bore. Ya, I'm stuck on the old straightwall and slim-taper rimmed cartridges because what's the use of building a classic gun if you're not going to burn some black powder in it?
