Solenoid like a car..I don't have the schemo except some possibilities. i hazard to guess except it's interesting. For if out of a small winding of a multi wound xformer they did a simple rectifier so that 12v was at one side of the low amp coil terminals of the solenoid then that would be referenced to the other side. Then if with that lead off and unpowered a resistance check could be made across the winding. like Mark said there are timers or variac which run at lower amps thru the controls which turn around and govern the serious amps of the xformer output. There's no 12v back to case ground. In fact both the low and hi amp sides should be isolated ..... see this is a waste of time- need a schematic.
