You are correct in that assessment, it is far easier to have people assume that you are an a$$hole, and not bother you, than it is to give them the impression that you are a fool to be taken advantage of.
You can always lower your suspicions on an individual basis, but once people think you are a pushover, you can never change that image.
I have lived in my place for 4 years, and lived in an apartment for 10 years prior to that, and DO NOT, and DID NOT know the names of most of the neighbors (in the apartment, I did not know, nor care to know any of the neighbors).
