See the deal with a solenoid which I know you already understand is that it uses relatively small amps/small danger to slam together contacts carrying much larger amps. if the switch could carry the current they wouldn't have it in there in the first place. See you can make all kinds of voltage test when it's not under load..okay so the other way so you plug it in the wall. That's going to arc out the contacts there or you're arcing next to hydrogen gas out of some battery. If you have nailed it to this one component then that should be replaced. More likely it is the "control" to that which requires a bit more look.
