I have a 99 Ford Ranger with I am guessing the same key. I was able to get a key made at my local Ace Hardware with a chip for $15. The only problem is I think I had to have the two original keys to program the new key.
I have looked at that circuit that requires the special chip keys and it looks like you could bypass a relay and make it work but it also looks like the computer controls the ignition also. The info on those systems is real sketchy but I bet the car thieves know all the answers.
