Below was posted in the "letters" section of a local newspaper and I thought it worthy of passing on...
I drove myself to lunch last Monday. I chose a parking spot in the rear of the lot. I had a digital camera on the console of my truck. Returning from lunch, we noticed nothing wrong or missing. Tuesday I needed the camera. I could not locate it. I began to have that sinking feeling. Wednesday, I approached my truck to place my computer bag in the front seat. As I reached to open the door, I noticed there was a small hole right under the door handle. I inspected it more closely. The “light” came on slowly for me. I phoned my friend who owns a body shop and asked if he had any vehicles with damage to the doors that looked like a bullet hole. He said, “Yes, I see it all the time. Thieves have a punch and place it right under the door handle, knock a hole through, reach in and unlock it, just as if they had a key.” No alarms, broken glass or anything. I then called my insurance agent and explained it to him. I was puzzled that they left my GPS and all other belongings. “Oh no,” he said. “They want the break-in to be so subtle that you don’t even realize it. They look at your GPS to see where ‘home’ is. Now they know what you drive, go to your home, and if your truck isn’t there, assume you aren’t and break in. They will leave a purse or a wallet and only take one or two credit cards. By the time you realize there has been a theft, they may have had a couple days or more to use them. Had they found your checkbook, they could have taken checks from far in the middle section so that you wouldn’t notice.”
Please remove your home address ASAP. List your home address as the local Walmart or something. Do not leave valuables in sight, inside the vehicle.
