I am not sure but I think the coil is very close to the key housing. I would think that you could cut the key part off but first after making a couple of non chip keys just tape the chip key near the key switch and make sure that it will work before cutting the key part off.
As I understand the truck will start with a non chip key but die in 30 or so seconds.
I have a shop manual on my 99 Ranger and I will look in the manual and the wiring diagram and see if I can find the coil on the Ranger and assume that your truck would be similar.
