Posted by Alan Pay I have traced my wife’s family tree back to William Jacomb born circa 1807 and his wife Matilda Ridley. I have a good deal of evidence and this creates an anomaly that I would like to explore through some conjecture to see if others can support or challenge my assumptions. I have the birth certificate of Charles Edwin Jacomb and this shows that he was born at 126 Sidwell Street St Sidwell in Exeter on 5th February 1845 and his parents were William Jacomb (a hairdresser) and Matilda Jacomb formerly Ridley. I also have a birth certificate of his sister Alice Laura Jacomb born at the same address on 20th February 1847. In later life Charles Edwin became known as Charles Edward and that name was given to a few generations of descendants. From the index of births I note that there were a few other Jacomb children born in Exeter around this period and I speculate that they were also brothers and sisters of Charles Edwin. These children were: Matilda Jacomb birth registered qtr 3 1841 I believe that Clara’s death was registered in qtr 3 1853 in Shoreditch in London. I also have the marriage certificate of Charles Edwin (in the name of Charles Edward) to Caroline Georgina Thomas Lintern 30 January 1864 in Exeter Registry Office and also a lot of evidence of him and his wife in various subsequent census records. My big problem is related to the 1851 census. This shows Charles Jacombe as a lodger in Exwick Village St. Thomas Devonshire. The head of the family is Jacob Morrish his wife Sarah Morrish and two other lodgers named Frederick Luscombe aged 26 and George Lee aged 23. What I do not understand is why Charles Jacombe is a lodger at the age of 6 when he has a family. This problem is compounded when I look at the 1861 census. At present I have been unable to find Charles Jacomb but I have found the following at 12E Holbrook Street, Hoxton New Town Shoreditch: William Jacomb aged 54 Hair Dresser, Head of Household born Leicestershire If this is the family of Charles Edwin it is odd as it appears that they were resident in Shoreditch in 1851 when Charles was a lodger in Devon (based on the fact that Emily was born in Shoreditch). I recognise that there are a couple of assumptions here e.g. the dates when Emily was born and the 1851 census was taken, but before I investigate further I would welcome any help that others can provide.
