Put it in general terms, I prefer `modern` Wagner. This choice may actually turn out to be very similar to your option for `classical` or even `bel canto` Wagner. What I men by `modern`? Relatively fast tempi, economical employing of orchestral tutti and fortissimo, voices free from inclination to shout and, at the same time, from the mannerisms of traditional oera, singers subordinated to dramatic purposes.
In this sense, Karajan, Boulez, Janowski and - unfortunately, incomplete - Dohnanyi are unambigously `modern`.
