Wagner was from the romantic era and I want his music to sound like that, not too classical. I want there to be real emotions, even some bombast is definitely needed. I'm not so crazy about the classical Wagner style that was fashionable in the 60's and 70's. In my opinion the worst examples of that are the Boulez Parsifal and Weikert Ring (Helsinki 2004). I think that style has something to do with being afraid of emotions. I guess emotions are not "cool". But I want to feel, not just think. Fast or slow tempi are not a very important question to me. There have been great performances with slow tempi as well as fast. My favorite conductors are Knappertsbusch, Karajan (live + the studio version of Parsifal), Levine and Leinsdorf.
