I have soft spot for Romanticism in general and Wagner in particular. Nevertheless, the approach to Wagner which I call "modern" does not have to contradict expressing - or making one to feel - emotions. I remember that my most profound - from an emotional point of view - experience with Wagner was brought about by Wotan`s Farewell from Boulez` Ring. On the other hand, I do not always feel moved by voices from historical recordings.
By the way, Karajan was often accused by his enemies of taking exclusively `objectivist` or `positivist` approach to the scores. As his `Ring` or `Parsifal`, among many other recordings, testify, this charge is as far as possible from truth.
