Posted by IreneDAdler I own the Kleiber/DG version and have listened to it through a couple times. I just love the first act, the sound is rich, the singing is perfectly polished. Margaret Price is somewhat surprising as Isolde, since, judging from the "Ballo in Maschera" I have, she's more suited to bel canto. I like her Isolde in the first act. It's pretty, and sung with feeling, but didn't quite match the fire-breathing impact that I thought Waltraud Meier had when she sung it for the Levine 25th Anniversary Gala at the Met (but then, she herself failed to reproduce that feeling on the Wagner recital disk she recorded for RCA). Maybe I was able to absorb the first act well because I was already familiar with the Narrative and Curse, but for whatever reason, I just couldn't get the point of acts II and III. It feels like Margaret Price starts flailing a bit... the Liebstod wasn't as transcendantly beautiful as I thought it would be. At any rate, I really should give it a couple more listens; maybe now that I've at least been exposed to the rest of the opera, I might absorb more next time (afterall, the first act was so promising!). But I'm also looking for another version myself.
