From Abendroth I know only the 3rd Act. As far as it can be judged upon this basis, this is certainly of the very best historical recordings of the Meistersinger. Abendroth seems to be equal to Toscanini, Furtwangler and Karajan from 1951. Both from the point of conducting are cast where Schoeffler, Kunz ans Suthaus constitute strong points.
Without hearing Knappertsbusch Meistersinger, I have some doubts whether his gifts were apppropriate for conducting the comical music drama which needs dynamic rather than slow tempi. Yet, this is of course to be judged from one`s own experience.
