Fast!
not quite Boulez, but still very speedy.
sometimes at the detriment of the music - which wasn't what i was expecting from Thielemann at all - take the final scene for instance: he rather whips through it.
It is not, however, gloriously sung. On paper, yes. But in actuality *quite disappointing*.
The stand out roles are Meier as Kundry, and The Flower Maidens (a really fine reading all told of this, coming after the disappointing Klingsor of Bankl. Domingo, whilst still beautifully voiced, sounds a little (ha) old for the role, but one finds oneself able to forgive that.
Chorus and Orchestra cover themselves in glory, aided by a fine recording, much better than the Tristan with the same forces.
I'm glad I own it, as it's something different: in approach, balance and speeds. But not ideal
Karajan and Kubelik still rule these waters.
