Posted by Robert Storm Both recordings have Kurt Moll who is my favorite Gurnemanz. James King is vocally a better Parsifal than Peter Hofmann, Hofmann is better interpretatively. I prefer Franz Mazura's Klingsor to Siegmund Nimsgern's. I think Dunja Vejcovic is a bit underrated as Kundry. I like her but prefer Yvonne Minton. I don't think either recording has a perfect Amfortas. Don't get me wrong, I think Jose van Dam is a wonderful singer. He just is so much better as Golaud and some other roles than in Wagner roles. Even though the singing is not perfect, the Karajan recording is my favorite Parsifal recording. It is a recording that really makes me feel something. My other favorites are Knappertsbusch 1964 and 1954. And I also often listen to the Muck excerpts and the recordings by Moralt (Treptow, Weber, Schöffler), Gui (Callas, Christoff) and Levine.

Karajan has a very personal touch, Kubelik doesn't. This is why I greatly prefer Karajan. For the exactly same reason some people prefer Kubelik.
