I just picked up both of these today from the Berkshire Record Outlet (how convenient that I live only about a 30 minute drive form them!). I'm listening to Das Rheingold and one thing I'm struck by is Ira Malaniuk's constant flubbing of her lines. She sings wonderfully and right on target...but with the wrong words! I thought at first she was just messing up her entry, but she continues on through almost her first scene with Wotan with many, many incorrect words. My German isn't perfect, but this is VERY evident that she is really off. Just follow a libretto. It sounds like she's just inserting any German-sounding word to fill in the blanks in her head. The music is there, just not the words. Do they use prompters at Bayreuth? If they do, she ignored them. I've never heard anything like it. Otherwise, it's a fantastic performance! The sound isn't perfect, but perfectly respectable.
