Posted by Robert In spite of this, I think that musically the best version is the one conducted by Levine (though some listeners can't get past his slow tempi). In my opinion Kurt Moll is the greatest Gurnemanz of all time. Franz Mazura has lost most of his voice but as a performance his Klingsor is great. Jerusalem and Meier sing and act very well. Staging is quite beautiful in a very traditional way. Unfortunately there is no Jessye Norman version of this. I wish there was as she is one of my favorite singers. Nagano is not one of the great Wagner conductors but his version is not bad either. Especially I like Thomas Hampson as Amfortas. Lehnhoff's staging looks very good to my but not everybody's cup of tea. I've heard that the Horst Stein/Wolfgang Wagner version will be on DVD soon. I think it is boring. Also, the sets look too much 80's to me. Those who want the opera exactly as it is, without much interpretation, may like it. Singing is ok, not much more.

The film version by Syberberg may be something that you either love or hate. I love it. Musically it's one of the best Wagner performances of the era.
