Posted by Robert Storm In 2004 I had very low expectations about Holl's Gurnemanz. He was better than I expected and his Gurnemanz has been getting better every year. Or maybe my taste just has developed. Now I even like his voice though he has some weaker moments. In the Ring I really loved Pieczonka and Haller. Most other singers were excellent. People say though that Gould and Dohmen don't sound as good live as they do on the radio. I'm not crazy about Watson, especially the last note in Siegfried was quite annoying. But the weakest singer was Wottrich. If I remember correctly, he was better last year. Both this and last year he was replaced by Robert Dean Smith in one performance. I hope Smith will sing the role next year. What made this Ring an unforgettable experience was Christian Thielemann's conducting. He really has become one of the greatest Wagner conductors of our time.

I was surprised by Herlitzius too (I haven't heard last year's Parsifal where she also sang the role). She's not a very familiar singer to me though I know that she has sung Brünnhilde at Bayreuth. I started to feel that I want to hear more from her. I'd like her to sing Brünnhilde in next year's Ring.
