Decca is about to roll out is monumental 33 disc set of all of Wagner's major works recorded live at Bayreuth. All of these have been released at some point before, but never all together and at such a low price. For about $65 you get:
1. Der fliegende Holländer (1961): Fritz Uhl, Josef Greindl, Anja Silja, Franz Crass
Conductor: Wolfgang Sawallisch
2. Tannhäuser (1962): Eberhard Wächter, Josef Greindl, Wolfgang Windgassen, Anja Silja
Conductor: Wolfgang Sawallisch
3. Lohengrin (1962): Anja Silja, Astrid Varnay, Jess Thomas, Ramon Vinay
Conductor: Wolfgang Sawallisch
4. Tristan und Isolde (1966): Birgit Nilsson, Wolfgang Windgassen
Conductor: Karl Böhm
5. Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1974): Hans Sotin, Karl Ridderbusch, Jean Cox, Bernd Weikl, Hannelore Bode
Conductor: Silvio Varviso
6. Der Ring des Nibelungen (1966-67): Annelies Burmeister , Gustav Neidlinger, Wolfgang Windgassen, James King, Leonie Rysanek, Theo Adam, Birgit Nilsson, Josef Greindl
Conductor: Karl Böhm
7. Parsifal (1985): Simon Estes, Peter Hofmann, Waltraud Meier, Hans Sotin
Conductor: James Levine
By and large almost none of these would be anyone's first choice (except, perhaps, for the Bohm Tristan and Walkure or the Varviso Meistersinger), but you have to laud Decca for rolling all of this out in one shot. I think I will get this, if only to have Bohm's Ring on disc finally. Everything else is icing on the cake.
