When I think of possible gimmicks I think of all female pit crews or drivers in chicken suits.
Changing the pit crew could be seen as a different rule a certain race but I could see it being viewed as close to being a gimmick just like restrictor plates could be viewed as a gimmick to create more exciting racing.
However, I think different sets of racing compound tires like IRL uses does have considerable merit by making teams use more strategy to win races.
