Posted by keith popko What a comfort it was to come to school and to be met with such a warm and loving person. I had many fears going into school, and Mrs. Berger skillfully handled each one I had. How lucky we all were to have someone who was so perfectly suited to teach as Mrs. Berger. I am not sure how long she was in Cameron, but Carol has informed me that she spent many years teaching in Stillwater before her retirement. I would encourage those who knew her to post some of their memories. I will start with some that I shared with Carol. "I always like to tell kids that I was in the first kindergarten class Cameron had, and that Mrs. Berger was my teacher's name. Years ago I helped some students come up with trivia questions for a game they were making about our school, and her name became part of the game. I have some fond memories of her: when she reassured me that I could find my nap mat even though I couldn't really read my name on it yet, her praising my efforts to make a Mother's Day gift despite the clumsy result, helping her decipher another student's babbling speech because he couldn't actually speak yet! (how in the world was he allowed to enter school?), cheering me on while Chuck Olson and I played "basketball" - what we did was try to hit the ducks and chicks that were painted on the wall with a ball. Just recently I was talking to the teacher who uses that room now and told her that story. She told me that when they removed the chalkboard that had been on that wall those pictures were still there. She was such a great teacher and she got many many students started on solid ground with their education. What a wonderful lady." God bless you Mrs. Berger - you will be missed.

I just got word from Carol (Emerson) Whitman that her cousin, Maxine Berger, has died at the age of 81. Mrs. Berger was Cameron's first kindergarten teacher. I was in the first kindergarten class that Cameron had, which began in the fall of 1956.
