Posted by Craig The next big jaunt this year will be again over my birthday. Desptie my rule of always going somewhere new for my B day trip to myself, I'm going back to Thailand for 3 weeks. With luck I'll pick up about 220 new species of birds. Here's the URL for one of the places I'll stay while in the highlands of western Thailand (http://home.tiscali.be/fr018787/birding/malee.htm) While in Thailand I will make day trips over the border into Burma (Myanmar), Laos, and Cambodia. And at the end of the 3 weeks I'm flying to Saigon to hang out in Vietnam for 3 days. Luckily I never had to go there back "then" but I'm still intrigued by Nam. I especially want to visit the famous Cu Chi Tunnels near Saigon.

Its been a pretty productive year so far. In January I followed half of my genetic roots and went to Norway for a few days. Didn't see any new species but I saw where my fathers side of the family originated. I also paid the most extortionate prices I've paid anywhere in the world. For instance, a taxi ride from my last hotel to the airport, all 1.8 kilometers was the equivalent of $22 US including the tip. In February I spent a week in the United Arab Emirates and Oman - the airfare halfway around the world was cheaper than flying to Los Angeles so how could I stay home? I picked up 27 news species on that trip bringing my world total to 5,081 species (out of 9958 species world wide). In March I went to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary for a long weekend. Again, not a bird trip but to look for roots (mom's side was half czech).
