Posted by Craig I remember in an email a couple years ago you jarring my memory about the time in 8th grade when Mrs Hoople had us doing a "How To" thing and I brought a real live rifle to class!! I showed everyone how to clean the damned thing starting with correctly removing the bolt and then putting all the parts back together again. Unfortunately in today's society if you went out with a gun when it wasn't hunting season someone would probably turn you into the Department of Homeland Surveillance and accuse you of being a "turist."

Ah, Mr. Popko. Since you've openly admitted to shooting birds I'd like to remind you of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (16 USC 703-711) which makes it illegal to take almost any bird in the United States in the absence of a permit to do so. The fine is up to $10,000 per bird. Now where was all of this plinking??? Of course if I was along I'm sure I had selective amnesia about the entire incident. Funny thing how so many of us in my profession got our start by plinking birds, turtles, and other critters. Of course, Dale Garner never did anything like that....Not long after I was married my now ex wife and I came across a kid armed with a pellet gun on the north side of Rice Lake shooting Cape May Warblers out of a blossoming apple tree. This was along Highway 48. I remember slamming on the breaks, jumping out of the car, and tearing this kid a new anal pore for the illegal thing he was doing. On returning to my car, she reminded me rather bluntly, that at that same age I was out doing the same thing with birds. I tried to reason with her saying, "but honey, I was shooting Yellow Warblers with a bb gun" but it didn't make any difference. Of course we divorced a couple years later also...
