Posted by Keith One of my favorite memories of her was near the end of the school year, and I misspelled a word for the FIRST TIME all year on the Friday spelling test (that probably came before those nasty Weekly Reader tests we were subjected to), and I felt devestated. As we were about to go outside for recess she pulled me aside and asked me to spell that word aloud and this time I got it right. She amended my grade to 100%, gave me a wink and a smile, and entered it into her grade book. I made doubly sure the rest of the year to get everything correct on the rest of my tests, and I did. She was so proud of me, and she let me know it. Another memory of her is that every time a train went by she would lead the class in singing "Little Red Caboose". Ha!! Billy Zahn: when he announced he was moving in 6th grade we had a surprise going away party for him. Kids pitched in enough money so that we could buy him a fiberglass bow (from the Holiday Station?) for $9.00, I think. I remember Chuck and I asking Mrs. Moe if we could hide it in her class until the party, and she happy to let us (we felt so grown up, coming down from the top floor to the lowly 1st floor where the "little kids" were). At the end of the party he went into the hallway outside our class on the 3rd floor and all of the girls lined up and gave him a goodbye kiss. He was in his glory. Do you think that would be allowed today? Gee, I don't remember Brenda's big bad bannister misshap - how could I have forgotten something so spectacular as that? Yes, Brenda - what breathing person could ever forget her?

Hi Jean!! Mrs. Switzenberg scary? That's hard to believe. But, now that I think about it, the rumor going into 3rd grade was that she favored the boys over the girls. That appealed to me! The summer before 3rd grade I broke my arm jumping from the big willow tree in our front yard. One day after the cast was put on she was in the neighborhood, at Jean Olson's house, selling encyclopedias. When she saw me she insisted on autographing it, and I felt really proud of that - she knew I was going to be in her class, I am certain. That little incident made her in my mind a little more special than the run-of-the-mill teachers at school.
