The reason she couldn't inspire us is the same reason we endured so many of those same kinds of teachers with the notable exceptions of Bob Salmon and Mort. These people came from the era of, "if you can't do anything else, you can always teach". I can honestly say that until I got to college, I didn't really know what it was to be educated. We came from the times of sit down, shut up and listen to me while I pour my vast reserves of knowlege into your feeble little brains. I guess that's why I went into education--I wanted to do things differently from the way I had been taught.
P.S. I have also been to the Louvre and Arles and yes it is a totally different experience, but maybe we just weren't ready for it until we were adults.
