Posted by Craig Faanes I dont remember if the root beer stand was an A and W...think not. There was an A and W in Rice Lake tho. However, I have had this passion all my life about out of state license plates and you just reminded me where that passion came from, Keith. Ever since college I have attempted to see license plates of all 50 states and had a goal of labor day weekend for getting them all. When I lived in Grand Island, Nebraska, I used to go out a 12:01 am on New Years day and cruise hotel parking lots looking for out of staters....New Years morning 1991 I was pulled over by the police who thought I was trying to figure out what car to bust into. Eventually I convinced them I of what I was up to...thank God I had a list of states in my car with little check marks by the ones I had already seen when the cop nailed me. When I moved to Washington DC I found it incredibly easy to get all 50 states and DC. In fact, on January 1, 1997 I found all 50 states and DC in 4 hours 13 minutes. The ellipse at the White House and the parking lot for the Washington Monument are a bonanza. It became so easy to get them in random order that I now do license plates only alphabetically. To wit, I have to see Alabama before I count Alaska. Alaska before Arizona, on down the alphabet (simple things for simple minds I guess). I still do this annual competition and have not been pulled over by a cop here. I was in Australia over my birthday (Halloween) and got the license plates for the 6 states and 2 territories of Australia while there. So, Keith, I think it was hanging with you at that root beer stand, scoping out license plates that got me hooked on this life long hobby of silliness. For that, my long time friend, I owe you a beer or 3 next time I get back home. Happy Holidays. Craig

Thanks to both of you for jogging aging synapses about the intersection of Highways 8 and 53 so very long ago (I still dont recognize the existence of the new 53...so SS is still "the" road in my book).
