Thank you Popko brothers for the neighborhood tidbits! Although I am not QUITE as old as you guys I remember Rathkes electric and the "blo gun" era. I had to trek through that neighborhood daily to deliver newspapers to the Lees across the street from Popkos, Oberholtzers and the Byrnes.
The downtown area, mainly the Cameron Permit Store was a central meeting point for all who attended Cameron High School. The Permit store was ran by two dear ladies, Dorthy Larson and Georgia Voight who not only ran the Pharmacy prescription pickups but also the soda fountain and snack counter in the store.Richardson rootbeer was always on tap as was coca cola and lime & cherry phosphates or any conglomeration of the above! Cigarette smoke loomed heavy in the noon hour during high school. There was a green metal news paper box out front that was the primary seat on a hot summer day in front of the store. The cast iron radiator inside was the primary winter seat! A peice of Cameron died in 1973 when the store was converted to the present day apartments!
