Posted by Keith Popko on 12/30/2004, 3:05 pm The Drug Store was the town piazza for the younger generations, whether as a noon hour hangout for the smokers or a pit stop on the way to other locales (the swimming pool, the "Hole", the barbershops, the Home Store). Kenny Byrnes was a regular imbiber of Coke (the drinkable soft drink) from there as well as a connoisseur of William Penn cigars from Dorothy's collection of smokeable products. My last moments as a civilian were spent there while waiting for the bus to take me to the cities for my flight to Marine Corps boot camp. My last sight of the place was watching Richard O'Brian sitting on the front step and watching him recede in the distance as the bus pulled away and as he lit up a cigarette before going to school that day.

Thanks Bob Snively for mentioning the Drug Store. Here are some brief thoughts:
Ah yes, the Drug Store - lots of fond memories of that place. The creaky floor boards, the candy counter, the magazine racks (how many of us camped out there just to read the latest comics?), the freezer with its varied frozen treats, the glass encased cashew display sitting on the end of the counter (did anyone ever buy any of those?). And of course the circular stools in front of the counter where we enjoyed the refreshments served up by Dorothy and Georgia as we read the history of other's love life carved into the counter-top. And as already mentioned, the remnants of others who had previously been there years past or recent, stuck under the counter in various states of petrification.
