Let's not forget how SE stiffed us on the PS2 DQ5 remake (and, of course, the PS1 DQ4 remake). From what I understand, DQ5's story and characterization are matched by very few video games. And, of course, most Brasington fans are familiar with DQ4's basic idea. By issuing the modern remakes of these two games in North America, Europe, and Australia, SE would have only boosted the non-Japanese DQ fanbase. Their international track record with DQ is only now starting to look up; DQ8 is the first game in the series to be distributed in Europe.
: Well, for one thing, you ain't gonna get that
: many replies on the Orange Board, that's fer
: sure. Go to the Dragon's Den and post
: there. You remember your password, right?
:
: My thoughts: Sure, it's cool that SE ported
: Final Fantasy 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 to the GBA,
: and 3 to the DS, so that the world can
: finally play them in English (or French,
: German, Italian, or Spanish) and on portable
: systems. But what I really would've liked to
: see were all new 16-bit-style Final Fantasy
: adventures on the GBA. Hironobu Sakaguchi
: might have left to form his own company, but
: several major key Final Fantasy staff
: members are still at SE: director Hiromichi
: Tanaka, writer Kazushige Nojima, artist
: Tetsuya Nomura, and many others. If they
: could combine their talents and make
: old-school Final Fantasy games in this new
: era, they would definitely be well-received
: in Japan, and possibly elsewhere. Even in
: 2006, old-school 2D RPGs are as big in Japan
: as they ever were.
:
: Of course, porting the classic Dragon Quest
: games to GBA would be more of a risky move.
: Although Japanese people will buy anything
: with the Dragon Quest name on it, I'm
: still not sure whether Dragon Quest 8 was
: successful outside of Japan. Yes, it sold
: several hundreds of thousands of copies, but
: is that good or bad in today's market?
: Rocket Slime (AKA Slime Morimori Dragon
: Quest 2 Daisensha ) seems to have passed
: under the North American radar, and SE is
: unlikely to bring Dragon Quest: Shonen
: Yangus to Fushigina Dungeon and Dragon
: Quest Monsters: Joker to other regions. And
: remember, although the GBC ports of Dragon
: Warrior 1-3 and Dragon Warrior Monsters
: have cult followings and got a lot of
: critical acclaim, they were commercial
: failures outside of Japan.
:
: And I'm sure I read somewhere (possibly from
: The Dwaine) that SE doesn't even read
: Dragon Quest -related mail from non-Japanese
: senders. Dwaine's exposé on Square Enix
: America's views towards Dragon Quest is a
: highly recommended read, which will both
: enlighten and enrage Anglophone Dragon
: Quest fans. However, it was written before
: Dragon Quest 8 even came out in Japan, so
: SE's stance might have changed for the
: better, at least a little.

: Outside Japan.
:
: Inside Japan, though, people are dropping
: whatever they are doing to purchase games in
: the Dragon Quest series.
:
: And it really irks me that none of the Game
: Boy Advance / DS Dragon Quests are any ports
: of any of the "official" (official
: meaning non-gimmick) games of the series.
: There are Game Boy Color ports, but face it,
: pre-Advance Game Boy cartridges won't fit
: into your DS.
:
: I think it's about time the Dragon Quest
: series made its way to Game Boy Advance, or
: at least the DS. Because, let's be
: honest... they're gonna run out of Final
: Fantasy games to port to one of these
: handhelds.
:
: Speaking of Final Fantasy, if you're
: thinking of buying the DS version of Final
: Fantasy III (the original Final Fantasy III
: that was for the Famicom), keep this in
: mind... the DS can also play Game Boy
: Advance games. So you can still buy Final
: Fantasy V and VI.
:
: I think it would also be a good idea if
: after you've bought them and played with
: them, we should write Square Enix a letter
: saying that we enjoyed the GBA/DS ports of
: the Final Fantasy games, and we would
: appreciate it if the Dragon Quest games got
: that same treatment. And not just in Japan,
: in other countries as well, particularly the
: US, which still has yet to see an official
: DQ5 or DQ6.
:
: What are your thoughts on this?
