Posted by Ernest on 7/28/2007, 2:35 pm, in reply to "Re: Centaur Charset" Japan has been...good and bad. The bad has been my dormitory, my classes and commuting, (the novelty of the commuter crush and a daily 2 - 3 hours of travelling wore thin quite quickly) plus, contrary to stereotyping some Tokyo people can be especially rude, particularly salary-men. I am from a very rural place in England, so I really wasnt used to the style of living - I feel like a grizzled veteran now though. The good generally outweighs the bad - I have made some really good friends, been snowboarding in Nagano (my first time - I could stand up and go really fast without falling, but I couldn't stop for shit!), Chilling out in Okinawa and Cherry picking and wine tasting in Yamanashi. Tomorrow, I'll be riding on a boat with my cooking class, wearing a yukata and zori and eating Tempura. As for otaku...well I got three perfect rounds on Virtua Fighter 5 against some guy (his name wasn't some guy) and I bought a pretty impressive arcade style stick to play mugen with the other day. Err, what else - I'm eating an onigiri as I type this! Oh speaking of Virtua Fighter - I had three months of karate classes - which were actually a bit awkward - I had studied martial arts in England (Chinese ones no less), and together with my height and long gaijin-limbs, I embarrassed some of the black belts when sparring. Having said all that, I'm looking forward to seeing my family and the English countryside, drinking British beer and getting a good bacon sandwich. Ernest --Previous Message--
Thanks. I found some on GGZ, though they will need some editing.
I had a birthday party in a retreat near mount fuji with about 50 japanese people singing happy birthday.
I've befriended the staff of a chinese restaurant and the local bakery, entirely staffed by very charming young women.
I've had monthly Traditional Japanese cookery classes, making dishes that even the average Japanese has never heard of or eaten. I've been to a sumo stable, meditated in Buddhist temples, had classes in Japanese drumming, calligraphy and swordfighting (with a real metal sword). I've taken part in various tea ceremonies.
AND I've been DJing in a Reggae bar for a part-time job!
