Ah, okay.
IIRC: there's an indicator on the bottom of the equip and shop screens with an up or down arrow for each of the four main classes. Equipment with a down arrow next to the name of a given class will prevent you from using that class' abilities.
In general, Fighters are allowed to use most if not all equipment, Clerics can equip most armor but only blunt weapons, theives can equip light weapons and bows and light armor, and mages can equip very little save staffs and the lightest of armor.
If you look at a characters status screen, some of their class levels will be written in white and others in a different color (yellow? red? I don't recall offhand)- this indicates that that class' abilites are disabled.
Another D&D-derived thing which may not be obvious is the fact that priest and mage spells are drawn from different pools of MP.

: OK...sometimes, a piece of equipment that you
: equip, will cause your Priest to not be able
: to cast spells!
: This is a major piss-off, because no one
: ever tells you this!!
: GAMEFAQS was able to answer the question. I
: unequipped everything, and viola!!
: SO...since this is a non-battle spell, I can
: keep everything equipped, and just drop
: equip when I want to cast...which is a royal
: pain in the ass, but at least I can cast,
: and know why I couldn't!!
:
: I have to say, the game's decent...but, if
: you never played ADVANCED D&D, or weren't
: good at it, or didn't like it...you probably
: won't like this game.
:
: By the way, I found the second-floor casino.
: Still really have no idea what I am doing,
: or where I am going...or even am supposed to
: go...but, seeing as my highest level
: character is level 4 I'm not too worried
: about it just yet.

: No, I can get the map, just fine. My
: problem
: is the spell that gives you the coordinates
: of where you are on the damn thing.
: I'll be in the dungeon, not in battle, and
: try to cast the goddam spell and the son of
: a b###h tells me my priest has no spells,
: which is bullshit.

: Hmm...
:
: All of the rooms you can rent in the inn
: will restore your magic (they won't all
: restore your health- it says if you look at
: the help text), so that shouldn't be it. You
: do have to be in the dungeon (or the
: training section) to cast spells, so maybe
: that's why?
:
: (yes, it's annoying, and no, I'm not going
: to defend the fact that you have to go to
: the guild to get your subscren in town. As
: near as I can tell, there's also no way to
: bring up the equipment menu in the shop )
:
: I assume that you're referring to the
: first-level mapping spell; note that it just
: shows you the same map you can open by
: pressing Y with your location highlighted.
:
: You will occasionally be shafted by luck
: alone early on, especially if you've rolled
: your own characters instead of using the
: standard set (the standard characters start
: at level 2). The best advice I can give you
: on this front is to save a lot, possibly in
: multiple files, and be conservative in your
: subterranean wanderings.

: OK, I am having a major PISS OFF moment
: here.
: When I rest at the Inn, it tells me my HP
: and magic points are refreshed...SO WHY THE
: SHIT WON'T IT LET ME CAST ANY GODDAM
: SPELLS???
:
: I want my MAP spell to come back so I can
: use it...but, no...I GET JACK-SHIT...AND IT
: IS PISSING ME OFF!
:
: I don't understand WHY I'm not getting my
: spells back...or how I get them to come
: back...the controls are not very
: user-friendly to say the least.
:
: All that aside, I DID manage to accidentally
: finish a quest...the one about the Graffiti.
: I had looked at the list of quests, and
: remembered something about graffiti, when I
: accidentally found some graffiti, and wasn't
: looking for it...so I quick ran back to town
: to take the Graffiti quest...and I then
: finished it and reported success, so I got a
: Quest done...wasn't really trying, I just
: took advantage of something I found by
: accident.
:
: I WISH I could find, by accident or on
: purpose...HOW THE SHIT I GET MY SPELLS TO
: COME BACK SO I CAN USE THE SONS A b###hES!!
: I WANT MY GODDAM MAP SPELL...so that I can
: wander the dungeon a bit more freely...right
: now I'm staying very close to the entrance,
: because of the fact that the map thing won't
: come back, and once, I got obliterated
: because of it. I couldn't find my effing
: way out, and so I lost everything I had
: built up, up to that point...MAJOR PISS
: OFF!!
:
: Anyway, Strider, you seem to know all about
: this game, how about some friggin' help?
