Well, just for reference, my party is:
L4 Warrior w/ Battleaxe, Wood Shield, Steel Helm, Platemail
L3 Priest/L1 Warrior w/ Flail, Wood Shield, Chainmail
L3 Theif w/ Longbow, Leather Helm, Leather Armor
L3 Mage w/ Quarterstaff, Leather Helm, Robe
The theif and the mage both spent most of their exp buying up various abilities (Disarmament/Lock Picking on the Theif, Ancient Languages on the Mage). I generally stay in the two in the front/two in the back formation with the Warrior and Cleric in the front.
With this party, I can survive with some luck on the second floor, particularly near the casino, but the enemy parties in the basement floor still own me pretty hard. I've explored about 2/3 of the first floor (A chunk of the bottom third of the map and most of the top third) and bits and pieces of the second and basement. I've clocked about 3 hours, but that's deceptively low because I tend to reset if one of my characters gets killed rather than pay to revive them.
As for general strategy, it sounded earlier like you didn't have a mage- you might want to reroll to include one in your party, as the first-level spell that puts enemies to sleep is very effective on the first floor and pretty effective on the second as well. I've been using it pretty extensively (in lieu of the fire spell they start with), and it's saved me more times than I want to think about. Enemy parties on the second floor give about twice as much experienc as the ones on the first floor, and if you stay in the area near the casino and save frequently it should be a decent way to grind your way up.
If you don't have the "Disarmament" skill on your theif, it may not be a bad idea to skip chests (particularly if they have the poison needle trap on them- you can figure out what kind of trap a given chest has by the item list that pops up when you inspect it). The loot on the first floor isn't honestly that good, and the traps can hurt a lot.
If you haven't figured out yet, the Scrap Metals you find on the first floor cast the first-level single-target attack spell on an enemy.
If you're saving frequently, you may want to reload if any of your characters die. Reviving them is expensive, and can be a long-term drain on your finances.
What do you mean about not having armor with weapons? Some of them are two-handed and will prevent you from carrying a shield, but AFAIK none of them invalidate armor...
How much of the first floor have you explored? Did you do the Moonlight Jewel quest? Did you find the second way up to floor 2?
