... well, yeah, that's usually what happens if you get a C&D letter- you stop doing whatever you're doing or fight it out in court.
Normally I'd be more sympathetic to the hackers, but they don't have a leg to stand on- admitting that you're knowingly doing something illegal in your readme file generally isn't a good idea.
