... well, yeah, that's usually what happens if you get a C&D letter- you stop doing whatever you're doing or fight it out in court.
Right, but my point remains that what they're doing in this case is extremely trivial. You're going to let your whole 300 fans download an unofficial sequel to a game that we're never going to make another cent from since it's the better part of two decades old, and probably wouldn't interfere with our revenue regardless since it's a completely unrelated project? Hell no. Such a thing would threaten the very existence of Square-Enix. We cannot let this travesty of justice continue. If people play this sequel, that will completely kill their motivation to buy the DS version of the original! Why's that? ####, I don't know. I'm a huge corporation, what use do I have for logic so long as I can ream people up the ass for things that are completely harmless? Oh yeah, and it will obfuscate the canon (The canon that we so carefully kept absolutely consistent between Trigger and Cross and most certainly never opened up a million contradictions or plot holes), since it's so hard to determine whether something's an official game or a fanmade one. It's not like those Crimson Echoes pirate bastards are going to use the words 'fanmade' on their official website multiple times or anything, I bet they're trying to pass themselves off as employees of Square-Enix unveiling the next official Chrono game!
I know they're within their legal rights, but I'm not going to support them when there's no practical reasons for calling upon that law. I could understand if there was any evidence that the existence of Crimson Echoes would do any harm whatsoever, but there's not. If anything, the sequel would make a few more people who'd never played the original interested in the DS version. Square-Enix is just being a giant cunt, plain and simple. They should've left the game well enough alone.
So... basically... I'm saying the same thing you did in your first post?
Personally, as someone who's usually happy to see 'fan energy' like this: while there's no doubt in my mind that Square is within their legal rights, this is still a pretty shit move on their part.
Exactly. Just because someone's within their legal rights doesn't mean they're right.
