You pretty much said it all, so I won't bother rehashing. Just wanna reply to this.
: I've gotta say for the record that I don't
: feel Hardtype is a very good example of
: this, simply because Hardtype was- for a
: long time- steeped in internet mythology
: about all sorts of crazy new content that
: the game had. Essentially, I think that
: those of us who were around the internet in
: the days before emulation when all sorts of
: crazy rumors were flying around about
: content that was cut ffrom the US release of
: FF2 were expecting there to be way more new
: stuff in Hardtype than there actualy was.
Actually, back in the day, I *knew* all of what was cut, and wasn't particularly expecting anything more. I just kinda hoped it'd make the game more interesting and diverse... which unfortunately, it didn't. On the other hand, it didn't *detract* from the game, either, so it was all just kinda "there". The only one that was truly awesome was the Alarm, which not only summoned an instant battle, but it was also always the *rarest* battle in an area, which made it absolutely ideal for both filling the bestiary (as the game had a horribly broken encounter system that meant it took *forever* to find the rarest enemies sometimes) and attempting to get rare drops.
: I will add on the other
: hand that I found Dark Wave very useful and
: that I was rather fond of Edward's
: heal-everyone-with-two-potions command,
: which made him a viable healer for most of
: the time he was in the party.)
I found Dark Wave useful early on, but I didn't find that its damage increased much. Interestingly, I think it was made *weaker* on FF4 Advance than its SNES counterpart, though I could be wrong. Never found Edward's command that good, though... as someone once put it, it's "like sharing a single slice of pizza with the whole family". Could be helpful in an emergency, though...
