According to one of the screenshots, the hero is reading a signpost that mentions the name Tonnura. ("East: Tonnura Desert") This is definitely a Dragon Quest reference, as Tonnura is a recurring name within the series. Mimas (a Dragon's Den member) explains below:
Tonnura was one of the possible names for the Prince of Samantoria (Cannock). His name has become an in-joke in Dragon Quest ever since. There is even a page in the Japanese Wikipedia concerning the name. To start with, the name sounds "odd and stupid" to Japanese people. On top of that though, in the Famicon version (NES), the Prince of Samantoria is kind of a weak character. Between these two facts the name Tonnura became known as being a particularly weak and uncool name. But not a hated name. The impact that this name created has caused the name to reappear in Dragon Quest on multiple occasions. In Dragon Quest V Papas wants to name the main character Tonnura at the start of the game (though he'll say a different name if you actually choose to name your character Tonnura). Tonnura is the name of the rebel army leader in Prison Town in Dragon Quest VI, and the name changer complains if you try to rename a character Tonnura. In Dragon Quest VII there is a merchant in the Immigrant Town and some people refer to the hero as having a "Tonnura type name). It also was one of the random names for monsters in Dragon Quest Monsters. Wikipedia says that Yuuji Horii came up with the name Tonuura from one of the fantasy books that he was using as a reference. From that they think that he is named after Ernest Tonnelat (Reference in German).
Also, for those who haven't noticed, BGM #1 strongly resembles the "Legend of Zelda" theme song.

: 3D Dot Heroes has recently piqued my
: attention as an interesting Japanese CRPG
: tribute of sorts- it's very clearly at least
: partially Dragon Warrior-inspired (although
: what little is known about it indicates that
: the gameplay is closer to Zelda), so I
: figured I'd point it out on this board.
:
: Looks pretty cool, and it'll be interesting
: to see it in action... The first trailers
: are due out at this year's Tokyo Game Show.
: As far as I know, it's a PS3 exclusive, so
: I'll probably never actually play it- but it
: looks interesting, at least.
