Posted by kpla on 6/17/2002, 9:35 pm Friday, May 24, 2002 BY ELIZABETH CLARK Her resume boasts some super-heroics to boot: She was a finalist in the 1999 Lilith Fair contest, a semi-finalist in the 2001 Pantene Pro-Voice competition and first place winner in the 1999 Michigan State University Coffee Shop Contest and the 1988-1990 Troy Daze Talent Contest. Plater, who grew up in Detroit and moved to Boston in 1999, earned a gig singing the national anthem for the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Pistons back in her Michigander years. It wasn't until the age of 19 that she switched gears from karaoke covers to writing her own folk-pop "vignettes." Said one critic: "I might as well just superglue the door to my CD player shut and keep it on permaplay." A reviewer from The Noise hit the nail with this comparison: "Natalie Merchant's 'Tigerlily' record (only without the pretentious inflections)." "24" is about as down-home as it gets, closing with a recording Plater and her father made when Plater was 5 titled "Kristin Wants to Play." THE LOWDOWN Kristin Plater will open for Electric Violet at Bell's Eccentric Cafe, 355 E. Kalamazoo, Thursday. Cover is $5, the show kicks off at 9:30 p.m. and is for those 21-and-up. © 2002 Kalamazoo.
