The 8th digit in the VIN is a 6. In 1981, it was mandated that all car manufacturers had to use a uniform VIN number. In 1980, the 5th digit of corvette VINs refers to the engine and a VIN of 6 refers to the 230 horse L-82. In 1981, the 8th digit of the VIN refers to the engine. However, there is not a "6" listed as an option for engines in 1981, meaning that if you go by the 6 from 1980, it's a 230 horse L-82. This is the only thing that makes sense to me and it took me forever to figure this out. If anyone has a better idea, let me know.
