If you end up stopping in Santa Ana, Motel San Francisco is a good place. I stayed there for the first time last year. It's right on the carretera, on the right hand side. There's a restaurant across the street and convenience store on the other side of the parking lot.
Here's the phone number and address I have for them: 641-324-1380; Carretera Internacional KM 164.5.
There were other places in Santa Ana that looked nice, too.
