Have you put a meter on the leads from the battery pack? If I remember right there are three leads. I am curious as to how the button behind the trigger may have been damaged. Have these taggers been disassembled multiple times? If so, it is possible that some of the wires on the battery pack, or others, may have suffered a fracture of the conductor inside the insulator.
Also as you have noticed, the design of the ELS port is sometimes inadequate to keep the circuit closed. In a few cases I have removed the entire ELS plug, socket and internal switch and soldered the wires together. This solved the intermittent shut down problem we encountered during aggressive tagging sessions. Of course this option will only work if you do not use the ELS scoring computer.
