Mike,
Thanks! I'm glad you find your new project interesting. I've been making progress on this new custom tagger very quickly because I'm building it for a member of our group and I want to have it ready for him to combat test on March 14th.
To answer your questions:
1. I don't at the moment. I'll leave that up to the member who will recieve this weapon. We've talked a bit about it. Seems he's fond of the gray and metallic portions of this thing so I'll be masking those up. Probably some dark camo, Black, OD Green, Brown.
2. I am leaving the forward portion of the lens tube off. I don't really anticipate any increase in self hits since I have the same "no lens tube" design on my Scope Rifle and haven't had any problems with that. The Firestorm's lens, though larger, puts out a smaller, more focused beam of light than most taggers, so I don't see this as being a problem.
3. The grip on the Firefly fits an adult size hand decently. I wear an XL Glove (big hands)and it's a little cramped for me, but nothing too bad. The only thing I've modified to this thing's handle is I've sanded the trigger area out a little since that gap seemed rather tight. The overall ergonomics for an adult aren't bad at all. I've found that these new N-Strike Nerf Gun designs are geared towards larger induviduals anyways. I had a few cousins over during winter break and they seemed to have problems with the sheer size of the Nerf guns and such. It almost seems as if they've engineered these to an older market than elementary school kids like I expected.
4. As I pointed out, I was only using the toy scope from Nerf on their rail system. N-Strike sets have a weaver-style equipment rail system that can affix a multitude of options. "Laser Pointers", Scopes, "Night Vision Light", and a few other toy gimmicks. They don't, however, fit a real Weaver-style scope. You could certainly mount a weaver rail and then affix a scope to it, but I haven't done that yet. As for the lens assembly, I simply mounted it to that orange piece you see in one of my earlier progress posts. It holds the black ring of the lens arrangement straight and the cone just attaches to the back side of that ring.
I've been going with the "V2 Firefly" for this tagger's designation, as the topic titles have suggested. I thought it was clever to take a Firestorm Lens and put it inside a FireFly Nerf gun and the text "FireFly" is already molded onto the shell, so I've kept with the name, only adding "V2" to the front to designate that it uses a V2 Firestorm Lens arrangement. From V2 Firestorm to V2 FireFly, just seemed like a good idea to keep the "Fire" word in there to signify the relation.
This weapon is being designed as the custom gun for our member "FirestormCamo". He's been tagging with us since we started the OLCA and even before we formed that he was with us. His signature weapon has always been the V2 Firestorm rifle, but over the past 4 seasons, we've had so many problems with Firestorms going bad or having electronics crap out on us that I decided to just build him a new tagger alltogether while retaining the impressive range of that legendary lens arrangement. To retain the red-dot scope that the original Firestorm had, I'll be equipping a Red Dot scope on a weaver-rail system I'll install in place of the Nerf rail system thats on this weapon.
