without going out and testing, doing math, etc, what I will say is that:
1) it's not a LASER. There is beam spread.
2) You DO have to aim. Even with the beam spread, without aiming your beam will miss. It's not like the spread is a giant cone like some cheap toys are.If you don't aim them, you will be lucky to land a tag at all.
the "hit box" size depends on range. at 10 meters, it's probably a little under .5 meter wide. While this might seem like a lot, especially compared to a LASER or a bullet (or paintball or airsoft pellet), it's important to note that aim is still required, and better aim means more reliable tags.
