I know all about handicaps in order to make yourself a little more "fair". The fact that you're building a handicap into the weapon (making it heavier) is a good way to do that. However, I've been one who's more of a fan of building different handicaps into my weapons. For instance, the pullback reload in my Scope Rifle II is really awkward to use. It's loud and gets caught sometime (bad design on my part) so that serves as the weapon's handicap. (It's much easier to take down an enemy who's struggling to reload in the heat of battle). You might want to try building a handicap in that's more gameplay based, something that'll slow you down instead of just be heavier. Thats just my thoughts on that.
As for sights, the ironsight on the main Longshot is nearly impossible to use since it has the elevated rail on there. I would suggest just using a simple red dot. You don't even need to bother with a Weaver Rail if you purchase one of the Red Dots from Dave at 1 Source Laser Tag. Just some widdling down of the plastic rail of your gun and his red dot will fit right onto your longshot. Putting on your own weaver rail system is too much of a pain for me to ever reccommend ever since I discovered that scope from Dave.
For the buttons, I would scope out a good location on the gun for you first. Where are you thinking of putting it? As for cutting, melting your way through can be innacurate and really just ruin the casing. For that button panel, I would take a small drill bit and drill out four corners where that screen will fit. Then use an exacto knife and connect the dots.
If you are going to keep the reload mechanism, know that it's not spring loaded and when you have the gun gutted, the mechanism alone is too loose and will flop around. To remedy this, either go through the painstaking process of building a spring loaded mechanism into it or, like me, just tighten the area where the mechanism sides by adding a sheet of plastic on one of the walls that it touches.
One of the things I've come to love about Laser Challenge is that it's a one lens system. For LTTO I know there's a second lens that sends data and such (all very cool stuff though). However, the Longshot is not a double barreled weapon unless you have the attachment on. You may want to remove the orange nozzle in the front and, with some cutting of course, fit your existing lens arrangement in there. I would personally fit this in with one barrel over the other as opposed to going with the side-by-side look that LTTO takes. When I built mine, I simply sanded down the edges of an existing lens arrangement I had for LC to make it fit snug inside that orange nozzle. There is no glue or cement holding it in... it's just THAT TIGHT. I've never had problems with it falling out at all.
I think some help from someone who's familiar with LTTO would be good for putting in your display screen and the lenses, since I don't really have experience with that. But keep throwing me construction questions regarding the Longshot case.
Hope it's going well! Post pictures of progress when you can!!!
