TagFest 2009!!
This was the first Tagfest I've been to but I imagine it sets a new standard. This year TagFest was held in at a private woods paintball course just outside Eugene, OR. I play regularly in David Roman's tag club but we've never had enough players to play the sort of games the place was made for until TagFest 2009. It was incredibly awesome to finally play fort defense, capture the flag, and assault hill the way I've dreamed they should be played.
Day 1: 17 people showed up. Everyone had to show off their new gadgets and mods. Finally we had a large scale capture the flag game. We mostly used LTX and customized TMB's so we split off into a blue team and a gold team. Blue team's base was in the fort while gold team had the bunker on assault hill. In video game style, players could return to their base to respawn so long as their flag was not stolen. I expected most of the action to take place in the 'village' area between the two bases, but we quickly discovered a network of secret trails through the dark, moss covered forest. Tagferret got lost in the forest and somehow came out 20ft from our flag on assault hill, which he stole and relayed to his nephew for the victory. We also played hunt the snipers. Everyone in a ghillie suit went off and hid while a large team searched the area for them. dx9 has the most incredible stealth skills, many times we would sweep an area and walk within 5ft of him without seeing him.
Day 2: Around 30 players. James Crumpton started us off with a game of Defend the Fort. One attacking team stormed the front entrance and cleared the fort but after all their hard work the other attacking team betrayed them and stormed the fort from the back entrance. Two more capture the flag games were quickly won by blue team. On the third game both teams hardened their base defenses and prepared for a war of attrition. I lead a number of covert missions through the deep forest but blue team had ambushes for us even there. There was almost constant action at both bases, players rushed through defenses with shields to take the flag then the defenders had to chase them down. Assault hill was the biggest upset of the day, the defending team was heavily outnumbered and expected to be overrun in ten minutes. Somehow they maintained fire superiority and kept the attacking team cowering in the ferns for over half an hour despite the best efforts of the medics to revive everyone. The last game of note was another hunt the snipers mission, only with a secret traitor on the large team. Two snipers down and a couple friendly fire incidents later, the traitor (Tagferret's nephew) finally revealed himself and took out all seven remaining team members in a brilliant series of false radio messages and misdirections.
In conclusion it was a blast to play with everyone who I only knew before by their names on this forum. I was extremely impressed with the skill level and equipment that everyone brought. It was quite fun and challenging trying to survive the custom TMB's and crack-shot aim of all the hardcore laser tag players, and also the terrifying new accessories TagFerret brought. Can't wait for next year!
