Combat Shirts are basically less kick-ass versions of the F.R.O.G. Shirts used by the Marines. The F.R.O.G. (Flame Resistant Organizational Gear) closely resembles the MCCUU, but replaces the torso portion with a flame-resistant, moisture wicking material. There are pockets on the upper sleeve amd velcro squares on the biceps for mounting ranks, nametapes, and the like.
Combat Shirts, now also used by the Army, are a neat way to keep your core cool. They are intended to greatly increase user comfort through the use of lightweight, moisture-wicking, and breathable fabrics. This is especially helpful when you're carrying gear on a vest of some sort over your torso.
I'm unsure of how resistant it is to snags on branches, as I haven't actually combat tested this yet. The fabric does seem sturdy, but I couldn't give you a green light on it without me testing it out myself. I wonder if it would have the same effect though... since the Combat Shirt is really just designed as a base-layer for those who wear vest equipment a lot.
The Combat Shirt works well for me since I'm going to be using a MOLLE chest rig for my sensors, as well as using it for carrying my gear for Airsoft. If you were to use the combat shirt alone, say with LTTO or LTX, where no gear on the chest is needed, I think it'd be defeating the purpose of the shirt.
As far as where I got it, Combat Shirts are sold by many different makers these days, with the newest and most notable ones being made by TRU-Spec. However, since they aren't really made in MARPAT yet, I had to dig deeper to find a store in Britain that custom made their own MARPAT Digital Woodland Combat Shirts.
I didn't order mine from TRU-Spec because I've yet to find a retailer that carries the MARPAT type they list on their website. I also like that mine has a zip-down collar and felt that brown was a better base color for this than green... but that's all personal preference.
Here are some quick shots I took of my Combat Shirt for you to check out.
