LCV2 Power Supply

Ever since I talked with John Pope of the MGL about Laser Challenge V2 weapon mods, I can remember how he told me about their power supply tricks. He told me that the V2 weapons should only have to work off of two AA batteries and that the third battery was simply there to power the ELS module that could be plugged in to record scoring and such.

On my Super Cobra weapon, I used a V2 board but only used 2 AAA batteries to power it with no detectable loss in it's abilities. This made me wonder... if there are 3 batteries in V2 weapons, which would give it 4.5 volts of power, how does it run just fine off of 3.0 volts? Techinically, wouldn't the extra battery in there be overpowering the board unless there was some kind of voltage regulator built into it?
