It was awhile back when I first discovered this while browsing through LTAG's Links List. There's a page that was created almost a decade ago that Alex Smith made. It covers a study that he did with the V2 System's ELS Adapter. It's called the "ELS FAQ/Hack". In this document he describes how the ELS system works and how to build an adapter for the ELS port that can turn on and off features of the gun.
How ELS Works
Basically, ELS was designed as an optional equipment that could be plugged into both the vest and the gun, connecting the two, and controlling their features, making for a very primitive "arena-style" system. For example: when the vest was tagged out, it would disable the power on the gun, making it inoperable. You could also print out your scores and such from each game. The problem is that only V2 weapons can use this system and, from what I've heard, it's features are really limiting. There's an ELS Port on both the V2 vest and the bottom of V2 weapons. However, the V2 weapons have a "dummy plug" that sits in place of the ELS Adapter when it's plugged in. When nothing is plugged in, the weapon doesn't function at all.
The Potential
There's a lot of potential to "customize" V2 weapons without having to open the gun up and make the changes yourself. By modifying a dummy plug, you can control the basic features of the gun. This means that you can turn off the lights, disable the reset button, even disable the reload if you're feeling ambitious!
The Downsides
By modifying the dummy plug, you can't reverse the changes. And since there's only one plug to a gun, what you modify is the only ones you have to modify. This means if you screw up the mod, you're pretty much screwed since you need that plug to turn the gun on.
So what do we do? Well for me personally, I know there are players who use weapons that would like certain features disabled. Although all of the OLCA's V2 Taggers have their Reset buttons disabled, there are a few weapons (like the Ultrawides/Firestorms) that still have this. Making custom chips to disable the reset function on those would be good. Also, for those Firestorm Snipers who don't want to have the Christmas Tree Lights going off while they fire, we can just insert a custom chip to "deserving" Firestorm users to turn the lights off without having to break open the gun and cut the lights permanently.
I plan on making a few custom chips and labeling them so that they can be kept track of and inserted properly. The OLCA Armory has 2 Ultrawides and 2 Firestorms can could use mod chips, but these could technically be used on any V2 Tagger.
