Zook,
This tagger is for Matt. He is really going all out to make this tagger as light as possible and still meet his performance requirements. That is why the lens assembly has been constructed out of the thinnest aluminum I could find. He has obtained aluminum fasteners to use on 90% of this project. It was very difficult and expensive to locate the proper types and sizes.
The black ring around the end of the barrel assembly is nothing more than adhesive back non-skid tape cut to the proper dimensions. I use this on the lens assemblies to dress up the ends so that it is not just a simple tube end. If you look at the last image in the post you can make out the texture that this material adds to the finished product. This is a simple, easy way to add detail to a custom lens assembly.
This method of constructing a custom lens assembly is used on most custom CTDYNE taggers. The fabrication methods and materials used are altered as needed for a specific project. I have used plastic for the IR LED bulkhead with good results. I have also used plastic tube for lens assemblies. It tends to be thicker and heavier than the thin walled aluminum shown in these images. But plastic will work just fine.
