This site has been set up by a fan, for fans of the activity known as home style "lazertag". It's purpose is to highlight players, games, add-ons, modifications, etc., regardless of the system that they use, for the benefit of other fans.

TMB missile busted?

K. Out of the brand new box today, in went the batteries, FAM went the missile against the wall, 5 self-hits registered. Sweet! Outside, didn't work no more.

I recalled during my manic reading of this awesome board that the impact sensor might be stuck. Found sensor, whapped missile per spec from TagFerret, no dice.

Further advice? More whapping?

The FAM against the wall was 12 pumps, not overkill.

sigh.

OK test it inside again but do not launch it. Just get the rocket ready and pull it out of the tube fast. If the impact sensor is stuck you will get hits right away. If not you should get them in 4 seconds. If you get nothing you may damage it with the point blank shot to the wall.

Tested as you said, got 6 tags! It lives! I'll test it later to find out why all those daylight outside grenade shots produced no tags. Thanks! That would've been a heartbreaker.

probably a method thing. Remember to land the missile ABOVE the targeted tagger. This way, as it bounces and tumbles through the air near the other tagger, it's landing tags. One of the most common mistakes is to shoot it directly at the tagger, or at the ground below, where the signals are being blocked by the tagger body itself.

Perhaps there's SOME method problem on my part. After more tests, I'm confused. I now have 2 TMB's (yay mail!) and missile function appears to be intermittant. Test is inside, TMB set to indoors, in LTAG, yank the missile, get the launch/explosion sound, hold it above the launching tagger's dome. With both, it works and I get six tags about every FIFTH time I do it. Tried covering some LEDs to see if only one was working, but that ain't it. Thought 'rocket ready' light might not be correct, and I needed simply to wait longer between tests... that wasn't it.

Now w/your suggestions, I held a deluxe upside down above waist level w/left hand, shot both TMB's missiles into carpet, 12 pumps, at my feet. Rocket was Ready. No tags.

So I'm assuming that if you take a TMB and fire it into the carpet and you've got another tagger w/the dome facing the missile impact, you'll get hits if you're within 10 feet? 'Cause that just ain't happening w/any reliability w/both these TMBs.

Got these new in original packaging. Thank you all for your patience!

So here's a possibility... Are you near a bunch of fluorescent lighting or perhaps in an area that has a lot of RF noise? Try doing this test in a completely different area and let us know what happens.

Sinistrahd, you made me realize my whole house is lit w/compact fluorescents. Seized my guns, stole out past the sleeping kids, and retested in the dark backyard.

Much better results. Greg's comment about using high bounces seems to be very important. What an amusing weapon.

Glad to hear it!

I'm sad, though, that a whole new generation of "green" lighting is going to play havoc with IR games... Not that the mercury in those bulbs is actually green, but at least they cut down my power bills!

CF lights don't seem to affect.

Don't worry Sinistrahd, the compact fluorescents in my house don't seem to be the problem, I think I just didn't observe the '30 seconds before reload' rule.

O/T: CF's rule. We only have 100amps in our old house. At night, other houses are dark. Mine looks like a lit chinese lantern from down the block! CFs and cheap blinds.

I should add that whenever the 'yank-test' works, tags happen after the 4sec delay, so sensor ain't stuck.

Missile has anti-pwnage feature: 30 sec delay before reload?

And now I think I understand, and I sure hope others can confirm.

I thought my TMB missile was busted because I didn't know about the 30 second delay feature. After you shoot the missile, if you reload the missile faster without waiting 30 seconds, it'll be disabled. Won't matter if it sits in the TMB longer than that after the reload. The thing won't tag. I suppose this keeps folks from reusing the thing rapidly, thus helping fair play.

I searched the boards and instructions for this factoid to no avail. I've now forgotten where I heard that tidbit.

Anyway, I wait > 30 seconds before shoving the missile back in, and bam, reliable function!

Y'all prolly know this as second nature by now, so I post fo' the n00bs! Viva n00bs!

ummmm what 30 sec? Maybe that was some running change put in that none of us have heard of but I can tell you FOR SURE that is most likely not the case. Here is why I know. I modded a tmb by hardwiring the rocket to the tmb to make a big shotgun. I just hit a switch and it"lauches" the rocket, and when I release the switch I get a rocket ready in seconds. I can then fire again.

I should also note this is an old code tmb. That is why I can fire the rocket live with the shields up.

The tagger is really unfair and I have some vid on youtube showing it in play. Though I did not last the game I delt out a lot of damage and got ranking 1.. go figure. Needless to say I do not get to use it anymore. I did just complete a much tamer version that I hope to try out this weekend. It will have less range with the shotgun than LTX but will have greater range with the lensed part so I think it is a good balance.

Nice video. Yep, no 30 second delay. Just did more tests w/both TMBs.

I think I should wait until I can demo them in action. Something must be wrong w/the way I'm testing. If I scoot the missile forward but leave it in the launcher, I get 6 tags every time. Very consistent. If I pull it out OR launch it, nothing.

Test was done in room w/bright walls, bright windows w/blinds tho no direct sun, no lights on, TMB set to indoors.

I'm curious because I get to do a game tonight at my church, me and three/four gals. It's the life I get to lead apparently. I wish the TMB were working like I imagine it should.
