Posted by Mary on 2/5/2005, 6:30 pm, in reply to "Discoloration in my dogs nails" Does that sound like what you're seeing? If not, then realize that some dogs naturally have "discolored" nails, in the sense that the entire nail is not always one color. Some dogs have white nails and black nails on the same paw. Some dogs have nails that are white on one side and black on the other, or black towards the base and shading to white at the tip. Also, as dogs age, their nails can become thicker and discolored. If your dog is not limping, licking at her paws, or otherwise seeming uncomfortable, its probably very normal.

In dogs with clear or white nails, you can actually see the quick inside the nail. A dog toenail is just like yours, only round. The white tip, the part you canm cut off, is first, then you can (sometimes but not always) see a pink-red line inside the nail. This is the quick.
